2009 Garden Party - Sunday, September 13
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY- The Community Foundation of Dutchess County 16th Annual Garden Party will be held on Sunday, September 13 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. This signature tented and catered event is presented to recognize local residents for their community service, while demonstrating the work of the Community Foundation in our area. The 2009 Honorees are Dana and Ira Effron, and Shirley and Bernard Handel. The Garden Party will be hosted by Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson on the Blithewood Lawn of The Levy Economics Institute.

2009 Garden Party Honorees
Currently President of EFCO Products and former board chair of the Community Foundation of Dutchess County, Ira Effron is a trustee of Vassar Brothers Medical Center and a founder and current Chairman of the Board of Riverside Bank. He has served on various local, regional and national nonprofit and professional boards including Dutchess Day School, Temple Beth-El, Jewish Federation of Dutchess County, Jewish Community Center, American Heart Association, the National Association of Flour Distributors and the National Baker Suppliers Association. Dana Effron has been an involved member of the Hudson Valley community, most notably as a co-founder of the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation. She has served on many local boards including the Dutchess County Arts Council, New York Stage & Film Hudson Valley Advisory Board, American Red Cross, Jewish Federation of Dutchess County, Temple Beth-El, Jewish Community Center, Hospice, Inc. and Mid-Hudson Hebrew Day School. Professionally, Dana is a marketing consultant for the Lee Wayne Corporation. President of Handel Companies and one of the founders of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), Bernard Handel is a trustee and past chair of Vassar Brothers Medical Center, Dutchess Community College Foundation, Poughkeepsie Rotary Club, and is a past board member of the Bardavon Opera House, American Red Cross and the Association for Senior Citizens. Professional memberships include NY State Society of Certified Public Accountants and the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans.
A Hudson Valley native of Dutch ancestry dating to the mid-1600’s, Shirley Handel has been a corporate executive fiscal officer and administrator of pension and health care plans. Her volunteer work includes having served in a leadership capacity for Poughkeepsie Day School, Hudson Valley Philharmonic, as well as serving on the boards of Planned Parenthood, Dutchess Outreach, Byrdcliffe Advisory Council, Eleanor Roosevelt Center at Val-Kill and the Dutchess County Historical Society. “The volunteer event committee decided to take advantage of the Community Foundation’s 40th Anniversary to recognize two couples whose dedication, desire for long-term benefits to our community and broad range of interests truly reflect the mission of the Community Foundation,” said Nancy Rossi Brownell, Chair of the Community Foundation 2009 Garden Party Committee. “The Effrons and the Handels are both well recognized for their personal contributions to a variety organizations and causes over the years, from health care to the arts.
