Fall 2008 Ann and Abe Effron Grant Awards

Thirty-one grants totaling $69,000 have been awarded from the Ann and Abe Effron Donor Advised Fund Grant program.  The committee reviewed 55 grant requests totaling $149,531.  Funding priority is given to organizations involved in arts, culture and education with special consideration being given to grants that would make facilities and events more available to young people and senior citizens. 

Fall 2008 Grant Awards

Bardavon 1869 Opera House
$2,000

The Bardavon will present, “Sinatra and More,” featuring vocalist Mark Raisch performing a concert of Sinatra favorites and other performers from that era. The grant will be used to offer transportation to seniors from Newburgh, Kingston and throughout Dutchess County.

Beacon Community Center
$1,900

Support for six live performances of the exciting original adaptation of "King and Kennedy", the historic meeting of these two great men; and an original adaptation of the classic play/novella "Of Mice and Men". There will be performances at schools during school hours, and after school for community organizations.

Brandeis University National Women's Committee
$3,000

Support for the digitization of approximately 100 books.

Center of the Square
$1,200

Funds would be used to hire a professional local artist to offer superior instruction in the arts; continue a joint venture with the Barrett Art Center, which would give campers a better understanding of different types of art and a chance to exhibit their work in an art show of their own; and offer a field trip to a New York City or Albany art museum.

The Children's Annex
$2,000

The Children's Annex has engaged Dr. Blank to provide training on Light on Literacy for two days at seven hours per day. This professional development program will empower staff, enabling them to better meet the needs of children at the Annex. Ultimately, students will be able to communicate more effectively and function more positively in their homes and the community.

Community Hebrew School of Dutchess County

Funds to institute a Special Education program within the Hebrew School that will provide children necessary assistance to succeed within their individual classrooms.

Funds to provide teacher aides in classrooms.

Congregation Schomre Israel of Poughkeepsie
$3,500

Support for a concert in October 2008 featuring Jewish and Hispanic Music.

Council on Addiction Prevention and Education of Dutchess County

Support for expansion of The Marathon Project, a distance running program that pairs adult mentors with at-risk youth in Dutchess County that aims to reduce risk factors such as childhood obesity, school drop out and substance abuse. 

Dutchess Community College Foundation, Inc.
$1,500

Funds will be used to help with materials for KinderMusic, and group lesson tuitions.

Dutchess County Association for Senior Citizens
$1,000

Support for the summer concert series which is seeking to expand and reach out to seniors in the summer.

Dutchess County YMCA
$3,000

Funding for KidzLit and KidzMath, further augmenting the services provided to more than 450 youth in the county.

FOVEA Exhibitions
$2,000

Expanded access to the Expanding Visions educational tours which bring internationally renowned photojournalists to Dutchess County and regional K-12 schools on a regular basis.

Friends of Seniors of Dutchess County, Inc.
$2,000

To reimburse volunteers for their gas mileage for transporting seniors to medical appointments, including doctors' appointments, labs, physical therapy, and operations.

Howland Cultural Center
$1,000

Partial funding for two spring concerts and master classes: pianist Soyeon Lee (March 28), and violinist Kyu Young Kim (May 16).

Hudson River Housing, Inc.
$2,500

Support for enrichment programming at River Haven which provides at-risk youth with exposure to art, music, history, sports, cultural events and education workshops. 

Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, Inc.
$1,000

Support for a sail for 50 for inner city youth in the Hudson Valley who would otherwise not be able to participate in the educational programs offered aboard the Sloop Clearwater.

Iota Alpha Omega Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

To provide 12-15 Grade 2 students enriching experiential learning experiences which are designed to enhance the core skills of reading, writing and oral presentation.

Jewish Community Center of Dutchess County

Support for a series of programs which embrace many facets of the Jewish Arts including literary arts, musical arts, culinary arts, the fine arts, film arts, and many others.

To pay for a portion of the salary of the Children's Education Law Program attorney. The Children's Education Law Program is a component of the Children's Advocacy Unit, which provides a wide range of legal services to hundreds of poor and low-income children throughout their service area each year.

Mid-Hudson Children's Museum
$1,500

Funds will be used to offer free or reduced admission to students and children unable to take field trips to the museum or attend artistic performances due to the cost of admission and/or transportation fees.  Funding will be used specifically to reduce the admission fee for groups during guided visits and special presentations.

Mill Street Loft, Inc.
$1,500

To provide partial or full scholarships to children from economically disadvantaged families and to children with special needs to attend the Dutchess Arts Camp in the summer of 2009.

Millbrook Book Festival
$1,000

Support for the Millbrook Book Festival which provides a weekend of book centered cultural events and activities that aim to be fun as well as intellectually enriching.

Poughkeepsie Chapter of Hadassah
$2,500

Support for Young Judaea Camps and The Hadassah Medical Organization.

Poughkeepsie Farm Project
$800

The Educational Programming Scholarship Fund will increase the ability of children, youth and young adults to participate in hands-on learning activities at the Poughkeepsie Farm Project by providing funding to financially limited community organizations that work with young people.

Poughkeepsie Public Library District
$4,000

Support for the second and third year of the Big Read sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Project Thunder
$500

Support for a volunteer based program that provides tutorial assistance for children from grades 5 through 11 in the Poughkeepsie City School District to help them pass the state-wide regents and achievement exams.

Saint Francis Healthcare Foundation
$700

Support for a children's music program that will provide meaningful leaning experiences for 35 children, aged 2 months to age 2 1/2 years, who are enrolled in the non-profit Saint Francis Day Care and Special Needs Preschool at the Saint Francis Hospital Children's Center (Formerly the Martha Lawrence School).

United Way of Dutchess County, Inc.
$5,500

Support for The Financial Stability Project which begins with free tax assistance for those eligible for Earned Income Tax Credit.  All sites connect people to financial skills classes and offer a prescription discount card.

Vassar Temple
$900

Trip to The National Yiddish Book Center in Amherst, Massachusetts. The intergenerational trip is a culminating activity for teens and adults from Vassar Temple, other local congregations and those unaffiliated, who took Vassar Temple sponsored Yiddish courses during the past two years.
