Community Foundation of Dutchess County Awards $72,000 to Teachers and Students

 
Poughkeepsie, NY – The Community Foundation of Dutchess County hosted its 25th annual Partnership in Education awards reception at the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel. More than 150 people joined the Community Foundation for the awards reception.
 
“With school budget cuts and the state of our current economy, the Community Foundation is pleased to provide local educators and students with opportunities to enhance their careers and education,” said Andrea Reynolds, President and CEO. “The Community Foundation exists to improve the quality of life in our community and education is a fundamental building block in doing so.”
 
Twelve Fund for Excellence in Education Grants, totaling $15,000, were awarded to Dutchess County school teachers to recognize the important contributions they make in improving learning opportunities for students. In the past 25 years, the Foundation has awarded more than 612 grants totaling more than $415,000 to teachers. 
 
Since 1997, the Taconic IPA Science Equipment Teacher Grants program has awarded more than $166,000 in grants to middle and high school teachers in Dutchess, Orange and Ulster counties to expand student learning opportunities in the sciences through the acquisition of classroom and laboratory science equipment. This year, twelve grants totaling $11,129 were awarded.
 
Two teachers were awarded the Excellence in Teaching Global Issues and World Affairs Award, which is given to a high school teacher in Dutchess, Orange, Putnam or Ulster counties who strives toward the highest levels of personal and professional accomplishment in the teaching of Global Studies and World Affairs. 
 
In addition to teacher grants, 15 scholarships totaling $45,500 were awarded to students in Columbia, Dutchess, Greene, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Ulster and Westchester, from the following funds managed by the Community Foundation: the Joseph H. and Mildred C. McManus Scholarship, the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation, Steph­anie D. Brown Memorial Scholarship.
